ampersand necklace red and black on scrabble tile

I recently came across some metal printing blocks at a vintage shop, and knowing that there are some type geeks in my family, I decided I would buy the ampersand and see what I could make with it. I had these scrabble tiles from a Pick Your Plum order a while back and they seemed like the perfect idea.

I used my hammer and pounded the top of the printing block to make an impression on the scrabble tile.

The first tile took the impressions, but they still didn’t show very much. So, for the second one, I used my Sharpies to color the printing block before I pounded it into the tile.

I had these metal trays from another project, and they fit the wood scrabble tiles perfectly, so it made sense to me that the tiles could use some extra support after all that pounding I did. You can see that these printing blocks were not designed to be pounded with a hammer, as I completely warped this one and bent it out of shape.

I put some DG3 Art Gel into the metal trays and inserted the scrabble tiles.

Then I added some DG3 to the top of the scrabble tile. I used my finger to spread it around evenly and get the air bubbles out. Then I let them dry.

The first one I did without the Sharpie on the printing block didn’t show up much at all. I didn’t think anyone would wear it like that, so when it dried I sanded off the art gel and re-stamped it, this time coloring the printing block with Sharpie. Then I added art gel again and let it dry. Here’s how they turned out:

Came over from Whimsy Wednesday. I was thinking I might want to try this since I have a collection of metal type. That is, until I got to the part about the hammer bending it! Yikes! Still, I love the pendant.

Yes, I thought I’d better share the part about damaging the the printing block before anyone tried it for themselves. :) Glad you like the result, though. Thanks for stopping by.
