side view Katniss braid

This is the Katniss braid from the Hunger Games. If you’ve seen the movie previews, she has a beautiful Dutch Braid (inside-out French braid) that starts on the side and swoops around the back. I know a lot of people who will be wearing their hair this way when they go to the movie. For this braid I used my niece as my model because she has really great Katniss-like hair. Here’s her hair before I started braiding.

starting hair

Start the braid like a regular French braid on one side. Instead of folding the hair over the top of the braid, fold it under the braid. I often forget, and accidentally fold it over midway through. Don’t do that. Just keep reminding yourself to fold it UNDER.

winding the braid

Once you get to the other side of the head, finish off with a regular braid. If you want to, you can pull on the hair to loosen it up a bit. If you are braiding curly hair, you probably don’t need to loosen it up, since it’s easier to do a loose braid from the start.

Here’s the back.

Once this Katniss braid was done, another sweet niece decided she would like one just like it. So here is the other version. Hair before braid:
