Are there songs that remind you of a certain time in your life? I have tons of them. One of them is Coldplay’s Viva la Vida. Here’s what it reminds me of: I was in New Hampshire with my kids on vacation in 2009. Instead of a lake day, we spent the day going to the old folks home to visit my grandmother (their great-grandmother). They weren’t that excited about the day. On the way down, we listened to this song over and over, figuring out the lyrics. Each person in the car had something to add, and explained the logic behind the words. By the time we got to the assisted living place, an hour later, we all knew the lyrics to this song. We visited my grandmother, who didn’t remember the kids and asked us the same questions over and over again. On the way back to the lake, the kids all said they were glad we went, because they could tell she liked having us there, even though she wasn’t sure who we were. My heart melted. They were exactly the people I hoped they would grow up to be. I’ve always wanted them to love their family, give of themselves, and be respectful of the people who came before us who are part of who we are. Check, check and check. It was a spectacular day in the life of a mother.

Here’s what we listened to for that whole road trip:

It’s been three years since that day, and my grandmother has since passed away, but I still smile every time I hear this song. And I can’t help but turn the volume way up and sing at the top of my lungs.
