More Driveway Photography
This is my second attempt at driveway photography. The first one is here. I still had the same chalk from the dollar store that I used the first time, and the color was still not very intense. I saw a recipe for sidewalk paint that called for food coloring and corn starch. I didn’t have any corn starch on hand, so I used my food coloring (dollar store version, so not a big investment) to intensify the color of my chalk. I just added drops of food coloring to the top of the chalk and they were absorbed immediately. I had to add a few more drops after I wore the tips down on the chalk.
I drew some balloons and a rainbow on the driveway while listening to the John Williams station on Pandora. It really helped me to have movie music playing while I was trying to draw (not my strong suit). Imagine the Indiana Jones theme, Star Wars, and Forrest Gump music. If you haven’t tried listening to movie scores, I highly recommend it – it makes you feel like you can accomplish anything! Once I finished my artwork I talked a couple of my kids into posing. It’s a good idea to take the photos when your driveway is not sunny. For me, that’s evening, but it might be morning for some of you. In the evening, the driveway is still really warm, but not quite as hot as it’s been on these 100 degree days. The lighting is also really nice without direct sunlight and nobody complains about having to look into the sun.
I stood up on a ladder to get the balloon photos, but not the rainbow photos.

I’ve tried this a little before too. It is so fun. I love the way yours turned out. Another way I found to intensify the color of the chalk is to soak it in water & use it damp. {We accidentally discovered this when my granddaughter left her chalk out in the rain!} One of my pictures can be found here: http://www.michellelunt.com/2011/10/blogging-101-how-to-get-them-to-linger.html

Thank you! I’m glad you popped over for a visit!
I love this. It is so absolutely creative. I could see having a lot of fun with this when the kids are a bit older and more willing to pose. Maybe I could talk my 5 year old into the idea.
Jodi, I think you probably could talk your kids into doing this, especially if they get to do some of the drawing, and then they get to see the digital photos as you’re taking them so there’s that immediate reward.
Good luck!

These are absolutely adorable! Thanks for sharing. I would never have thought to add food coloring to sidewalk chalk to bring out the color. I’ll definitely have to give it a try.
