Photography in the Rain
A few days ago we had a rip-roaring rainstorm. Maddie wanted to do a photo session in the rain, so she art directed and I shot the images. Since I wasn’t interested in getting my camera wet, I stayed in the garage and shot the photos from there. She pulled out her vintage umbrella, a thrifting find from last year, and ran out into the rain. I love how the color pops against the darkness of the storm. It was only 6 pm when this storm passed through, but it looked like night time outside. First we tried some photos without the flash, but most of them came out blurry because it was so dark outside. Here’s the best one of the no-flash shots:
You can see that it was raining pretty hard and the rain looks blurry. It really looked a lot darker outside than what it looks like in this photo.
Once we decided to use the flash, the photos looked more the way Maddie was imagining them. The raindrops reflected in the flash, creating a cool effect. Some of the photos show the rain in front of her face and a dark shadow on her face from the rain that was passing by during the shot. These images are a better reflection of how dark it got all of a sudden. It was really a night and day difference between 5:45 and 6:00. After a couple of minutes in the rain, it started to hail! Then she came running back to the garage.
This is our favorite photo from the shoot:
Have you taken rain photos before? How did you protect your camera?

Those look like fun!! I am going to try taking some rainy day photos!!
Thanks, Peggy! They were fun. Here’s to rain!
She is just too cute! I hope my daughter and I have the such a great relationship when she gets older. I love the photos and couldn’t get over the size of the hail.
Thanks, Jenny! Maddie gets more fun every year – the fact that she always wants to try something new inspires me to try new things, too.
I am so sorry! I cannot remember the name of the company- but I actually have a plastic sleeve that fits around my camera. It is not water proof, but it does a pretty good job in the mean time. If you are really wanting to find something like that. Anyway, have a good day! Coming to you from the blog hop.
Thanks, Gina! I’ll have to be on the lookout for something like that. I wonder if I could DIY something? Thanks for stopping by.
I have never tried.. but you have me inspired to!! Great shots!
Thanks so much for sharing this at The DIY Dreamer.. From Dream To Reality!
Thanks, Christine! I want to see your photos if you give it a try!
The first one is my favorite. I’ve always wanted to take pictures in the rain—right now we’re in a drought so doesn’t look like I’ll get to try any time soon.
We’ve been in a drought, too. It it made us love the storm even more! Here’s to some rain in your area.
