Ruffled Canvas Bag
Yes, it’s another bag. They are so much fun to make that I don’t know if I’ll ever stop. For this canvas bag, I just added a ruffle using fabric from a thrifted shirt that didn’t fit the way I thought it would. Since I still loved the fabric, I knew I could think of a good use for the unwearable shirt. See the two panels at the bottom of the shirt? Chop. That’s what I used. I just cut that strip right off the bottom of the shirt, so it was a complete circle with no ends. The bag is one I bought at Hobby Lobby. If you go, it’s a good idea to check back until they are 50% off, because it seems like it happens pretty often.
What made the ruffle really easy is that it was already hemmed. I just ran a stitch along the unhemmed side of the fabric and gathered it into a ruffle.
Then I laid the ruffle on the bag inside out, with the hem pointed up, like in the photo.
I made sure the ruffle was gathered enough to fit around the bag, then sewed it onto the top of the canvas bag. Once it was sewed on, I grabbed the bag by the handles and shook the ruffle down.
For a finishing touch, I added a topstitch to the ruffle. See the photo below.
That’s it! I added the gift and some matching tissue paper. This bag can be used again and again long after the gift has been opened.

I love this bag! So sweet to give a gift in a keeper – I’m going to start doing this. Thanks for the inspiration! I’d love it if you’d link up to my Show & Tell party, going on now @ the Delectable Home.
Thanks, Tisha! I like the term “keeper.” I’m linked up now.
I love bags. I make ruffled ones that I sell at my shows and they are always a big hit. I mean who doesn’t like going shopping to the grocery store, or to the farmers market or the library with a stylish bag on your shoulder?
I also add pin flowers that can change out too.
Love that you found a shirt to use- very resourceful and saved a ton of step..smart girl.
