While reviewing the posts from from my first few months of blogging, I noticed that I wrote about headbands a lot. And those were many of your favorite posts, too. So I’ve decided to set aside one day per week to write about things to wear on your head, whether it’s something I made, or something magical that someone else made.

For the first Wear It On Your Head Wednesday, I want to share this hat tutorial. Well, it’s so easy I’m not sure I can call it a tutorial. Maybe it’s more of an idea.

Start with some hats from the dollar store. I’ve seen several different styles and colors there, so just pick your favorites. I used my felt scraps and some of the vintage buttons that I’ve accumulated over the years. If you don’t have any felt, you can buy sheets of it for about a quarter at craft stores.

Next, cut the felt into the shapes you want to use. Play around with the buttons, too. Lay out all the pieces on the hat to get the positioning the way your want it. I recommend pinning the felt in place before sewing it to the hat, because I didn’t do that this time and the felt moved a little. I used my sewing machine to sew on the felt, then sewed the buttons by hand. I have made these before and done all the sewing by hand, which gives it a more homemade look. The first one I made this time is a tree. I love the different white buttons.

This next one was inspired by the colors and patterns in the buttons. I wanted something simple to highlight them.

This last one is a style I’ve made many times. There are always so many combinations of fabrics and buttons on this one. This flower looks good on scarves, too. It’s fun to see how much changing the order of the petals can change the whole look of the flower. The same goes for trying different buttons. It’s worth it to test out different layouts before you start sewing.
